The Power of the USSR in Art Empty
ΔημοσίευσηΘέμα: The Power of the USSR in Art   The Power of the USSR in Art EmptyΤετ Δεκ 22, 2010 2:53 am

The USSR kept a strict regime over the whole of Russia during the Communist era. This was seen very clearly within USSR art and the posters which the Communist regime created during this dark time in history. It left a stain on Russian history and culture forever, but some interesting art came out of the USSR’s scheme to spread propaganda and make Communism dominant.

Most of this art was comprised of posters which encapsulated a specific idea about Communism within each poster. These posters might seem a little strange or silly to us now but they once were a dominant part of how Communism traveled throughout Russia. Even in other countries this propaganda was seen as the USSR exercised its extreme intelligence scheme.

The art of the USSR has odd connotations and characteristics about it, a little bizarre and enticing at the same time. Certainly we cannot deny the creative elements of these USSR posters. There is an element of the Communist idea within them but they are not realistic. We could even see them as being funny now, but the underlying threats which dominated that era are not funny.

In spite of the extreme censorship and force with which the Communists ruled, there was a great deal of creativity that took place in Russia in this time. Artists and musicians still managed to exert human expression under the Communist regime, as was seen through composers like Shostakovich and even in the strange art put out by the USSR. Of course the USSR art had a lot more restrictions placed on it.

Indeed, in all the art and music that came out of the Communist era, there is a degree of military oppressiveness that manages to linger about. In a great deal of the culture that was produced in the USSR at this time, it can be seen, this sense of oppressiveness and control that the USSR exerted over people. It is very clear, even within the posters themselves.

USSR art is now collected and displayed throughout many Russian art enthusiasts’ homes in the US and other areas of the world. Of course it is easy to obtain replicas of this art now, and many artists are hard at work to recreate the strange and terrible might of the USSR as it was seen through these posters and works of art.

We certainly must recognize what a great addition these USSR posters make to collections from times when Communism was dominant in Russia. However we need to be sensitive in how we treat this period of history as it was so traumatic, but we can still remember what happened and art is great to remind us of that. These USSR posters do that job very well.

USSR culture is something of a strange period in time, but magnificent in its own right. We should not dismiss the creations that were produced during this time – indeed, we should display them. Any collector would do well to add a piece or two of USSR culture within his or her collection.
